Local car scene facebook page was posting about “MEET AT 12:30 TOP OF THE PARKING GARAGE WILL HAVE PRO CAMERA”, so I decide to show up and laugh at people. Oh lord. To start with, the pro camera was the same thing I’ve got; a Nikon D3100 with a kit lens, which is a starter DSLR. Also, there was this.
So many poverty-spec Mustangs. The one in the middle made “340hp with sports exhaust, intake, tune, and bigger injectors”. Yeah, buddy. I’m sure it did. Did the stick-on hood scoop add 20hp, too? The one on the left was stock except the exhaust had fallen off. I felt much better about my Mustang after seeing these.
Tuner wheels on a DeVille? What.
I do love me some hood ornaments, though.
These always look nice.
Holy shit that’s a lot of neo-chrome
How do you fail this bad at a rim job?
Possibly the only cool cars here.

Take off the stickers and put some half-decent wheels on it and I’d agree. Nice car, questionable decisions.

Sterilized, corporate-directed repetitive pictures of cars from the exact same angles over, and over, and over, and over, and over for a Chevy dealership. Hardly “photography” but technically I’m a “professional photographer”. I use every opportunity to actually get *good* at photography outside of work, but I’m still leagues behind most portrait or studio photogs.

Luckily, every video is pretty different and doesn’t feel “corporate”. Lots of the work I do are showcases of employees who have been with the company for awhile. It allows me to be creative and edit with emotion, not a script.

Except that wasn’t the gripe you originally posted (and is actually nowhere in the post). As I see it, you were complaining about their cars being shit (to paraphrase) and their camera gear being garbage (also a paraphrase). If you complained about their behaviour being reckless? Absolutely 100% agree with you. But since you just complained about their vehicles, yeah I take issue with that.

Ive been using mine for a while. It’s better than most point and shoots, but calling it a “pro camera” is delusional. The body is OK, but prone to pretty bad luminance noise even at iso100. The kit lens is a decent starter piece but chromatic aberration is pretty damn bad.

Had some really nasty paint chips and scratches that could easily be fixed if the owner gave half a damn. There was some godawful shift knob that didn’t match the car at all, some stupid seat covers, and it has fuzzy dice in the mirror. I like fuzzy dice, but in a car from that era it’s just... no.

I get your feeling. I’ve been to such meets before. You get a bunch of people that aren’t that much into cars (with near stock cars) that are really coming into the scene so they don’t have a lot to talk about (yet), a few morons that are more into the look at me/doing stupid stuff (usually those that make the neighbors call the police and ruin the meet) and the fast&furious genius mechanic that magically extract a million HP from a few simple mods. Not really the kind of people that will make you stick around... I’d try to find another meet if I was you.
Avoid those meet that are promoted via facebook unless they are run by serious people (like a meet that get’s all the proper authorization from the owner of the land, neighbors & city)
Starting with meets from your own brand or particular car interest is a good way to get the connections and to gather with people that share the same passion (It could be the mustang forum, or a miata/mazda group.... etc)
PS-The mazdaspeed3/6 (nator) guys are a great bunch of no bullshit people. “Gay” miata’s are well accepted (The gay thing is a running gag).... many members do track days with their miata and keep their speed3 as daily driver, So don’t be shocked if that ever come up :P . We all know that the miata has more racing creds than all the AMG’s together.
One of the most hardcore miata racing dude even sport this as his profile picture.

A friend has an ‘06 V6 4.0 Mustang with a Vortech supercharger and exhaust mods that was tuned on a dyno.
300 even to the wheels.
How in the name of Cthulhu does exhaust/CAI/tune make 340 on a 4.0?And why would those 3 minor/basic mods constitute the need for larger injectors? This is why we can’t have nice things....
Lenses are more important than the camera itself. You can get some great shots from that one with good lenses and know-how.
I took the above with an Canon Rebel XS....

This is true. In person the car just comes across to me as a half-assed restoration that hasn’t been taken very good care of since it was “completed”. Definitely a 10-footer.

Yeah, the guy got SUPER defensive and assholish and I instantly felt everyone turn against me when he got that way, because how DARE I insult their cars. I mentioned that mine was a rental (first owner was a rental company) and they thought I meant I was renting it and their first instinct was to ask if they could steal parts off of it before I returned it. Fuckers.
That’s some nice bokeh in that shot. What lens is that?

On a car like that it should have period correct mods. Not a rat-rod-ripoff shift lever, fuzzy dice, and loud obnoxious seat covers. None of it fit at all. As I said in another reply the car looked like a half-assed restoration that has been neglected and/or abused since it was “finished”. It’s a 10-footer for sure.

I didn’t come to the meet expecting intelligence, there just isn’t a whole lot else around. Turns out one of those GTIs is a legitimate tuner from Oklahoma and is making 350-ish at the wheels. There was an insanely loud (like, many-liters turbodiesel loud) turbo’d EK Civic I would have loved to see the engine bay of but the owner got weirdly defensive when I asked what he was running. At least I how not to act, lol.
I honestly don’t get too many gay jokes about the Miata, but I am CONSTANTLY getting “ha, GAAAAAYYYY” when in the Mustang, to a degree that’s really grating. Mostly because it’s being shouted out of rusted-to-nothing slammed ratty 90s Civics with their 103hp washing machine engines.

What’s the advantage of a prime lens? I would think the fixed focal length would mean a LOT of running around to try to get things framed right (or just have a super high-res sensor and the ability to crop in post). Are they just cheaper for higher quality/faster glass since they don’t have moving parts?

My first prime was a 50 1.8. Broke it, bought another and later sold that and upgraded to a 50 1.4. Got the 28 1.8 to go with it. The primes do make you think about framing your shots.

That’s the fucking problem. They have the same poverty-spec base model Mustangs I do and they’re running around with their heads up their asses revving their godawful-loud cutoff mufflers in the middle of a populated area and doing burnouts and driving way too fast through a parking garage full of cars and people. I mentioned my car was an ex-rental and they misheard and thought it was a rental *now* and started asking if they could steal parts off of it before I return it to the rental company. The corvette owners, VW guys, and the guy with the red mustang were alright, but everyone else were super douches. I’m fine with fun, but a lot of the crap they do is just dangerous. Even the street racers around here don’t like most of these types.

I’m not really insulting it. It’s a rough restoration with mods that don’t fit the rest of the car, which is a pity because with a few small tweaks it would be a great show car.

I de-riced my civic. It had a stupid longtube header with NO exhaust, altezza tails, projector/halo head lights, stupid seat covers, broken steering wheel, a short shifter I kept around because it felt nice, some truly awful peeling window tint, and all sorts of nonsense. I tried some stupid stuff (cut springs, ebay coilovers) for shits and giggles while de-ricing it but eventually ended up with a comfy daily-driver that handled pretty nice for a FWD car and got 33mpg combined. But as you said, owning a Civic made me hate Civic owners.

just better glass, optimized for one “zoom” setting. Better glass = more ability to play with depth of field and fun stuff like that. I love highlighting a subject with my 300mm because the car is in focus and the background is all nice and creamy unfocused.
